For the second straight game the Flames vastly outshot their opponent only to end up losing.

The Flames built themselves a nice 2-0 cushion in the first period on the back of some really good hockey (the third line was very good tonight), but it all fell apart after the first 20 minutes. Sound familiar? Well it should because it’s basically what happened in Pittsburgh, just on a smaller scale.
After getting it handing to themselves for 20 minutes the Capitals turned the tables on the Flames in a game that the Caps really had no business being in. Former Flames farmhand Matthew Phillips showed everyone why he was such a heralded AHL prospect, including the team that never gave him a shot, by scoring a goal and collecting an assist (both career firsts). Those two career milestones would tie the game at 2-2 and even after a wide open third period, no one could collect the game winner in regulation. And then no one could collect it in OT, despite the Flames taking a boneheaded penalty to give Washington a 4 on 3 advantage. Washington would mercifully (what a boring group of shooters) end it in the shootout thanks Evgeny Kuznetsov’s opening round salvo and Washington would collect a 3-2 victory.
Yes the Flames earned a point, so that was good. But there was no way Washington should have even been in this game to begin with. Calgary owned this game early, yet it looked like they took their foot off the gas. It’s almost like the Flames don’t need an intermission because it totally messes with their flow.
Say what you want, but Jacob Markstrom isn’t the problem. He played well again tonight and if you only allow two goals, you should be able to walk away with a win. On the offensive end the Flames had the SOG advantage again, taking 17 more shots than the Caps, but getting nothing for their efforts.
