Andersson received his suspension after a call from the NHL today.

The Flames will be without assistant captain and defenceman Ramus Andersson for their next four games. Andersson received the four game vacation for his late and egregious hit on Columbus Blue Jackets star Patrik Laine at the end of Friday night’s game.

Per league rules Andersson could have received a maximum suspension of five games due to the hearing being over the phone, but they settled on four. Part of that decision making could be due to the fact that the Calgary Flames blueliner doesn’t have a history of dirty or play that is “on the edge.” Either way the NHL Department of Player Safety thought four games was reasonable and the punishment seems to fit the crime. There was no need for Andersson to lay that sort of predatory hit on Laine, which has the forward not traveling with the Blue Jackets and out with a lower body injury.
